Inside Line: First Line

It is not uncommon for the i30 to suffer from clunking or knocking noises from the front suspension, which is generally the result of wear in the top strut mount or bearing, the anti-roll bar bushes or the front stabiliser links. Naturally the First Line Group has replacements for these components in the First Line brand:

  • Top Strut Bearing (FSM5020) or Top Strut Bearing + Mounting (FSM5404)
  • Anti-Roll Bar Bush (FSK7115K)
  • Front Stabiliser Link (FDL7091)

Another potential problem during cold weather is the shock absorber rubbers and dust boots, which sometimes fail and crumble.

Sven Nielsen, Technical Director from MEYLE, says the following difficulties may arise with the Hyundai i30:

Worn out brake discs

Problem:

Worn out brake discs affect the braking behavior of the vehicle. Rust may play a major role in this case.

MEYLE Solution:

The MEYLE solution is a brake disc covered with a specially developed multi-layer zinc coating. The MEYLE PD coating simply provides better anti-corrosion protection.

Inside Line: Remy

The Hyundai i30 is fitted with an electric power steering system. This consists of a manual steering rack and an electrically operated power steering column. The rack is prone to wear in the bushes which can manifest itself in the form of play or knocking in the steering. The electric column suffers with problems in the optical sensor, either reducing the steering assistance or removing it altogether. This is often an intermittent fault that disappears after the vehicle is stopped and turned off. This fault can cause premature wear in the steering rack itself. Later models were fitted with a mechanical sensor to help improve the EPS columns durability.

On petrol 1.4- and 1.6-litre models a poor or non-start fault may not be the starter motor, but it can be attributed to a Power Steering module software fault, and a re-program of the power steering control module with upgraded software can cure the reported issue.

Other than that when it comes to starter motors the OE numbers must be checked to ensure vehicles fitted with STOP/START have the correct heavy duty replacement part fitted.

There are no common issues with the alternators, so it looks like they are quite a good buy.

A few notes about the Hyundai i30 (up to 2012):

Engine Oil

Hyundai tend to favour a product like 5W30 for most of their vehicles however the very latest engines may carry different recommendations so you should always check an application guide like ours before fitting any product.

Information on the Hyundai i30 from the guys at the IGA Technical Helpdesk:

  • 2.0d noise from timing belt is due to tensioner failure, if left unattended will cause belt failure (48 months or 50,000 miles is recommended interval).
  • 1.4 petrol engine poor performance and unstable idle - no fault codes, before attempting a repair there are ECU software updates for this engine that may give a fix.
  • Knocking noises from rear on rough road surface – rear suspension/shocker bushes wear.
  • Various instruments/warning lights inoperative – loose connections to the rear of the cluster or circuit board failure (modified part available).

Hyundai i30 up to 2012

VOSA released a recall for manual cars built during January and February 2012, for a fault with the parking brake mechanism. The mechanism allowed water to ingress and corrosion, resulting in the brake not releasing completely. Technicians looking to resolve a rear brake binding problem should pay attention to the free movement of the handbrake cable and the rear calipers, as both could be the cause of the problem.

Inside Line: Manbat

Introduced in 2010, all versions of the popular A1 incorporate the company’s Start-Stop system.

As these vehicles begin to drop out of the franchised dealer network and enter the independent sector, workshops, and the technicians undertaking service and repair work on these variants, need to bear in mind that they are not fitted with traditional lead-acid starter batteries. Instead these models use an AGM battery such as a VARTA® Start Stop Plus and will therefore require specialist knowledge and equipment to ensure the correct removal and installation process is followed.
