The Hyundai i30 is fitted with an electric power steering system. This consists of a manual steering rack and an electrically operated power steering column. The rack is prone to wear in the bushes which can manifest itself in the form of play or knocking in the steering. The electric column suffers with problems in the optical sensor, either reducing the steering assistance or removing it altogether. This is often an intermittent fault that disappears after the vehicle is stopped and turned off. This fault can cause premature wear in the steering rack itself. Later models were fitted with a mechanical sensor to help improve the EPS columns durability.
