Audi A1 2010

Problems with the Audi A1 2010 seem to be fairly limited. So far there have been no DVLA recalls for this car and the general feedback has been good. Minor gripes include the size of the interior, a hard ride and also perceptions of poor fuel economy – with the latter two potentially being down to driving style.

Pencil coils make up 39 percent of the top 10 Cambiare sales on this model, so technicians looking to cure a misfire or hard start condition would be well placed starting their diagnosis here.

In second position, at 18 percent, is Cambiare’s engine management temperature sensor. Poor hot or cold starting, genuine high fuel consumption or lack of power, could be a result of this sensor giving out the wrong reading.

BEARING MANUFACTURERS FINED NEARLY €1 BILLION FOR CARTEL

A group of bearing manufacturers including NTN, Schaeffler and SKF have been fined a total of nearly €1 billion for operating a cartel. The European Commission handed out the fines to the companies as they ‘colluded to secretly coordinate their pricing strategy vis-à-vis automotive customers for more than seven years, from April 2004 until July 2011, in the whole European Economic Area.’

Toyota Multi-Mode Transmission

Toyota’s Multi-Mode transmission (MMT) has been around for over seven years; fitted to the Aygo, Yaris and Corolla. You will find it being referred to as an automatic, and it is, but it shouldn’t be confused with traditional automatic transmissions. Traditional automatics provide smooth driving characteristics due to a transmission equipped with epicyclical gears, hydraulic clutches and a torque converter; the MMT has none of these features. This article looks at the concept, how it works and some of the issues that arise for the technician.

Timing Belt Replacement

The belt replacement on the 1.4-litre diesel engine in the PSA 107/C1 can sometimes be problematic, so Dayco, as the original equipment (OE) timing belt supplier for this engine, has issued a technical bulletin (TI0054EN) to guide technicians through the process and ensure that these problems are not encountered.

Once the engine has been dismantled and made ready for the installation of the new belt, make sure that the crankshaft aligning tool and the camshaft tool are properly fitted and that the fuel pump pulley is properly aligned.

Mid-Production Clutch Diameter Increase

Tim Hodgkin, Technical Support Technician at ZF Services UK advises that early 1.0 litre models of these vehicles equipped with the five-speed manual gearbox suffered from premature clutch wear. Many owners complained of slipping clutch, noise from the clutch during stop/start motoring, or burning smells, and as a result, the vehicle manufacturer upgraded the clutch from 180mm diameter to 190mm.

With regard to the Peugeot 107 , Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo

The issue we have is regarding the Timing chain

We sell TCK80 for the engine (1KR-FE) fitted in all these vehicles.

Reason for replacement of the chain kit is due to the chain “stretching”.

TCK80 meets OE specifications and will when fitted regain synchronicity.

Water Pumps

Although from 2009 an up-rated water pump was introduced to remedy the problem, the water pump originally fitted to the model range between 2005-2009 was prone to failure after 3 years or so. In order to combat this problem, First Line offer two up-rated water pumps to cater for these vehicles: FWP2115 for the 1.0 litre models and FWP1949 for 1.4HDi models.

The original plastic housing for FWP1949 has also now been replaced by aluminium because the plastic version would become brittle and crack when going through hot and cold cycles.

Inside Line: Meyle

Sven Nielsen, Technical Director from MEYLE, says the following difficulties may arise with the Peugeot, Citroën and Toyota:

Defective wheel bearings

Problem

Loud metallic rolling noises are indicators of defective wheel bearings. Increased wheel bearing tolerances can also be diagnosed by tilting the wheel while the car is not under any strain. In order to prevent more serious damage or the complete loss of the wheel bearing, the driver should seek the assistance of a repair garage as soon as possible.

Oil Service Answer

Sump Plug replacements for these models are not always easy to get in a hurry from dealerships. The repair of damaged threads on a sump plug is an unreliable science that also increases non-chargeable garage time.
