Gates says a specific issue with maintenance of the Synchronous Belt Drive (timing belt) Systems of the 1.4HDi diesel engines as fitted to the Citroën C1, Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo demonstrate the value of using the timing belt tool kit that's been specifically designed for the engine.

• Burning smell when hot - oil leak from front of gearbox input seal.

• Knocking noise/vibration from rear suspension - rear axle tube support bushes split/perished.

• Petrol engine intermittent misfire and poor starting, various fault codes recorded and the engine management light illuminated - excessive carbon build up on all spark plugs. Replacing the plugs may fix the misfire but if the codes will not delete the Cat could be damaged.

• Intermittent loss of power steering and various fault codes in the system (C Codes) with the steering warning light illuminated - loose connections on the EPS module located behind the crash padding on the driver’s side.

Inside Line: Suplex

Citroen C1, Peugeot 107 & Toyota Aygo – in production from 2005 onwards

Front & Rear Suspension

C1, 107 and Aygo share a common platform and 90 percent of components are identical. This includes coil-springs and only three part numbers – two front springs and one rear – are required to cover all models. Rear springs locate in rubber pads top and bottom and have a long life, but the lower end of the front spring locates directly in the pan welded to the front strut and metal-to-metal contact, over a period of time, causes accelerated corrosion of the bottom coil. Recommend to vehicle owners that rusty springs are replaced – in axle pairs – to prevent the inconvenience of a breakage on the road.

Inside Line: Forté

The Peugeot 107, Citroën C1 and Toyota Aygo are vehicles that are generally used for short stop/start journeys. This can lead to an increase in the contamination that builds up in the oil and fuel system resulting in vehicle running faults, high emissions or component failure.

To help maintain the cleanliness of the oil and fuel system, vehicle performance and efficiency, it is recommend to clean the oil and fuel system at regular service intervals using Forté's Clean & Protect, carrying out a 45 minute Advanced Formula Motor Flush, adding Oil System Protector to the new oil and adding either Forté Advanced Formula Gas Treatment or Forté Advanced Formula Diesel Treatment into the fuel tank.

A few notes about the Toyota Aygo/Citroen C1/Peugeot 107 (2005 onwards)

Engine Oil

For this particularly series of cars, each manufacturer lists differing specifications for engine oil which should be covered by a number of Comma products. Do not assume that the cars will all use the same engine oil.

Inside Line: CES

  • Sometimes there’s a 'whirring whine' from 1.4HDI engine. This may be a failing timing belt tensioner, which is a roller bearing device like the idler pulley, but with a reddish rubber/nylon damper. When fixing, it’s wise to also replace the water pump which is driven by the timing belt.

  • The rear wheel brake cylinders have been known to fail. In some instances, this has happened on relatively new vehicles.

  • There have been some reports of watering leaking into the load area via the extractor vent, through the hatch seals or rear light seals. Within the cabin, there have been reported water leaks through radio aerial seal and passenger door seal.

Inside Line: Cambiare

Citroën C1, Peugeot 107 & Toyota Aygo 2005

The models are basically the same car, introduced around 2005, as a collaborative effort between Peugeot, Citroën and Toyota.

There isn’t much out there on these models and they seem to have been fairly reliable. There are no VOSA recalls for product issues that are safety related. Customers only seem to complain about premature wear of the clutch and leaking water pumps, but these problems are not so numerous.
