Inside Line: Manbat

Introduced in 2008, the ‘BlueMotion’ version of VW’s ultra successful Golf incorporates the company’s Start-Stop system.

As these vehicles begin to drop out of the franchised dealer network and enter the independent sector, workshops, and the technicians undertaking service and repair work on these variants, need to bear in mind that they are not fitted with traditional lead-acid starter batteries. Instead these models use an AGM battery such as a Varta Start Stop Plus and will therefore require specialist knowledge and equipment to ensure the correct removal and installation process is followed.

It is relatively common for the rear bushes on the front wishbones on several Golf models to become weak, which can lead to a change in the caster angle and can result in ‘feathering’ of the inside of the tyre.

Worn top suspension mounts are another common fault. Usually caused by repeated driving over speed bumps or on roads pitted with potholes, the symptoms often can be heard through creaks from the suspension.

Sven Nielsen, Technical Director from MEYLE, says the following difficulties may arise with the VW Golf:

Damaged shock absorbers

Problem:

Many car drivers lack awareness of the vital role shock absorbers play for overall car safety. The parts wear away gradually, many defects are not visible at first glance, but their impact on the overall car system is dramatic. Properly functioning shock absorbers reduce braking distances, ensure excellent roadholding when cornering and trouble-free operation of state-of-the-art driver assistance systems such as ABS, ESP or TCS.

Two common issues with the VW 2.0-litre TDI Pumpe Duse engine relate to the tensioner on the timing belt or Synchronous Drive Belt System (SBDS).

Unlike the latest engines, the Pumpe Duse engine is not a common rail engine.

If the technician fails to observe the correct torque setting 'plus angle, the stud can be pulled away from the cylinder head. This reduces the clamping load and causes the stud to shear.

The recommended procedure refers to the Torque Plus Angle method and states that once seated, the bolt must be torqued through 45 degrees. Technicians often assume -incorrectly - that this equates to a quarter of a turn.

A quarter of a turn is 90 degrees.

The common issues we’ve come across are below:

On all fuel vehicles – Corrosion on the switch for the CD player can cause the CD player to stay powered on when vehicle is parked resulting in the battery draining. This can create a charging or starting fault.

On Diesel Models – Faults with the engine coolant temperature sensor and fuel injectors cause a starting fault and can result in the starter motor burning out.

Volkswagen Golf >2012

There were quite a few VOSA recalls on these cars, but due to the amount that has been sold, it’s not surprising the number is so high.

The 2.0-litre diesel models built between 01/01/2009 - 15/12/2011 have experienced fuel leaking from the high pressure pipes due to excessive vibration. The addition of balance weights to the pipework resolves the situation so technicians tracing fuel leaks should bear this in mind.
