CAT Inside Line – Mercedes-Benz C-Class (- 2014)

Gates says that an increase in vibration and, consequently, greater noise levels from the drive system in some 1.8 (Petrol) and 2.0 (Diesel) engines in this range, are often attributed to the drive belt - in error.

In such cases, replacing the belt alone will not solve the problem, as noise levels will continue and wear to other components within the drive system will increase after the belt has been replaced. Gates advises that the Overrunning Alternator Pulley (OAP) should be inspected.

My Technical team have come back to me with the following issues for the next Inside Line article on the Mercedes-Benz.

Failure of one or more relays can cause a starting fault resulting in excessive cranking of the starter motor causing the starter motor to burn out.

OE numbers must be checked if the vehicle has STOP/START so the correct Alternator or Starter Motor is fitted.

A few notes about the Mercedes C Class ( -2014 ):

Engine Oil

For this particularly model, Mercedes list a number of specifications for engine oil which should be covered by Comma Syner-G 5W40 or Syner Z 5W30. However, always use an application guide to make sure you get the right product for the vehicle you are servicing.

Mercedes C-Class <2014

The Cambiare technical hotline has dealt with issues covering:

Diesel powered cars may experience the engine control unit going into ‘limp home’ mode due to a failure of the differential pressure sensor for the DPF. If no fault codes are recorded in the engine ECU, technicians should check the operation of this sensor as part of their diagnostics.

Technicians diagnosing oil leaks should bear in mind that some C classes have been recalled via VOSA to address a power steering leak at the pump. While the colour of the oil should steer them away from an engine oil leak, old PAS fluid combined with engine grime, may distract them.

Renault Espace:

Corteco points out that following a front-end drive system upgrade, the auxiliary drive systems on some models in this range have failed prematurely because the Torsional Vibration Dampers were changed without fitting new TVD bolts. Corteco recommends that TVDs and TVD Bolts should be replaced along with the drive belt, as part of a drive system upgrade.

All TVD bolts are not the same, which until now was an issue that created storage and selection issues for motor factors and workshops.

Inside Line: KYB

Replacing the front shock absorbers is an unusual process, as the replacement takes place within the dashboard rather than under the bonnet. KYB has produced a fitting video to demonstrate this tricky installation which you can find on www.youtube.com/KYBEurope. KYB also has a fitting video to show how to replace the rear shock absorbers, as they are fitted at an awkward angle.

Inside Line: Dayco

Dayco

The 2.0-litre petrol engine in the Espace is fitted with a Dayco High Tenacity (HT) or white timing belt as its original equipment fitment. This unit also features a water pump that is integral to its timing drive system and driven by the HT timing belt. Therefore, workshops undertaking either a water pump or timing belt replacement, need to realise that only by fitting a Dayco HT timing belt kit can they be assured of a genuine like-for-like replacement.
