Common issues affecting Peugeot 207 Starter Motor and Alternators:

The Alternator is known to be affected by fluid ingress causing alternator to fail prematurely on Diesel models – possible causes include diesel leak from the fuel filter. Another common issue is for pulley failure due to worn auxiliary drive belt, affecting both petrol and diesel models.

On 1.4 HDI models the Starter Motor can burn out due to excessive cranking caused by a pre-existing vehicle fault causing the replacement part to fail prematurely.

Stop start options available on starter motors it is important to check OE numbers to ensure the correct part is fitted.

A few notes about the Peugeot 207 (to 2012):

Engine Oil

• Peugeot tend to favour a product like Comma Protech 5W30 for most of their vehicles however the very latest engines may carry different recommendations.

• Some of the engines options fitted in the Peugeot 207 have quite small sumps – the 1.6HDI for example has a 3.8L sump with a further 0.5L held in the filter.

VOSA recalled nearly 13,000 207’s to resolve a potential engine cutting out problem, as the result of an incorrect specification battery earth lead being fitted. Technicians beginning diagnosis for a similar condition should bear this in mind and check the specification of the earth lead, its resistance and security.

Poor running, hard hot or cold start, high fuel consumption might all be the result of a failing Engine Management Temperature Sensor. These make up 27 percent of the top ten selling Cambiare parts for the 207.

Engine mis-fires could be the result of a failing ignition coil. 22 percent of the top ten 207 Cambiare parts sales are pencil coils, followed by 8 percent for the rail coil.

Introduced in late 2008, the BlueEFFICENCY versions of the Mercedes C-Class incorporated the company’s Start-Stop system.

As these vehicles begin to drop out of the franchised dealer network and enter the independent sector, workshops, and the technicians undertaking service and repair work on these variants, need to bear in mind that they are not fitted with traditional lead-acid starter batteries. Instead these models use an AGM battery and will therefore require specialist knowledge and equipment to ensure the correct removal and installation process is followed.

Inside Line: Corteco

Mercedes-Benz C-Class:

Corteco has added a fix for troublesome trailing arm bushings on older models. Cracked, split or oil soaked bushings will cause problems because their condition is critical for rear axle alignment. Evidence that replacement is required is likely to include a ‘clunking noise’

when cornering, negotiating roundabouts or passing over ‘speed bumps’.

A sign of uneven wear to tyres is further evidence that the trailing arm bush has been prematurely compromised by wear.

Corteco adds that carbon activated cabin filters are the OE fitment for these models. A standard or non-carbon activated cabin filter actually represents a downgrade for the customer, warns the company.

Despite being subject to inevitable wear and tear during the lifespan of the engine, the front end auxiliary drive (FEAD) system has not traditionally been subject to any particular maintenance or replacement schedule. However, some vehicle manufacturers are now beginning to introduce FEAD system maintenance into their service schedules, which opens the door for the independent sector to apply similar service principles to the auxiliary belt and the associated components, such as tensioners and idlers, that together make up the FEAD system and take advantage of a genuinely new revenue opportunity.

Inside Line: Meyle

Sven Nielsen, Technical Director from MEYLE, says the following difficulties may arise with the Mercedes C-Class:

Stabiliser links often worn out

Problem:

Intense strain and high surface pressure wear and stress on the ball joint. This causes a premature failure of the ball joint and generates noise at the front axle.

MEYLE-HD Solution:

MEYLE in-house engineers increased the diameter of the ball head of the ball joint to 22 mm, in addition to using wear-resistant synthetic ball sockets with high-tech grease. The reduction of the surface pressure ensures a significantly longer lifetime.
