Inside Line: Manbat

Although not launched as a stand-alone Efficient Dynamics model until 2011, the BMW 5 Series incorporated Efficient Dynamics technology, including the company’s Start-Stop system, from as early as 2007.

As these early examples are well within reach of the independent sector, workshops and the technicians undertaking service and repair work on these variants, need to bear in mind that they are not fitted with traditional lead-acid starter batteries. Instead these models use an AGM battery such as a VARTA Silver Dynamic AGM and will therefore require specialist knowledge and equipment to ensure the correct removal and installation process is followed.

Inside Line: Dayco

Despite being subject to inevitable wear and tear during the lifespan of the engine, the front end auxiliary drive (FEAD) system has not traditionally been subject to any particular maintenance or replacement schedule. However, some vehicle manufacturers are now beginning to introduce FEAD system maintenance into their service schedules, which opens the door for the independent sector to apply similar service principles to the auxiliary belt and the associated components, such as tensioners and idlers, that together make up the FEAD system and take advantage of a genuinely new revenue opportunity.

Suspension

It is not uncommon for the BMW 5 Series to suffer from creaking on the driver’s side rear suspension, which is caused by wear to the rear axle bush. To ensure the best possible outcome, the First Line Group (FLG) recommend changing the rear axle bush on both sides of the vehicle to solve this problem.

Clutch

The BMW 5 Series utilises a self-adjusting clutch, so when undertaking a replacement it is important for technicians to check that the self-adjusting clutch cover springs are still in a compressed state and have not been extended.

Inside Line: Meyle

Sven Nielsen, Technical Director from MEYLE, says the following difficulties may arise with the BMW 5 Series:

Despite successful oil changes comfort and switching problems still occur

Problem:

Transmission oil is highly stressed. It is aging and wearing by abrasion, temperature,

and chemical processes. This leads to high risk of reduced driving comfort and modified

gear changing conditions, up to costly transmission defects! Despite successful oil changes comfort and switching problems still occur because during an oil change for technical reasons only max. 2/3 of the oil volume is changed. Therefore many deposits remain in the residual oil and in the transmission.

Inside Line: Autoelectro

All Models with engine code N52 between 2005 and 2006 – Poor starting due to camshaft position oil pressure valve stuck or sticking resulting in excessive cranking of the starter motor causing it to burn out

All models between 2007 and 2010 are common for belt slip – ensure belt is correctly tensioned and that the tensioner is not faulty and is refitted and routed correctly

OE numbers must be checked for correct replacement starter for stop start models, as the stop start model starter motor is heavy duty.

Inside Line: Comma

A few notes about the BMW 5-series (up to 2011):

Engine Oil

For this particularly 5 Series, BMW list only one or two specifications for engine oil which should be covered by Comma Syner Z 5W30. However, always use Comma’s application guide to make sure you get the right product for the vehicle you are servicing.

Inside Line: Cambiare

Nearly 60 percent of the top ten sales of Cambiare parts for the 5 Series are taken up by ABS sensors. Technicians investigating braking problems and instances of the ABS light illuminating should take note that the ABS control circuit must be checked in its entirety. Simply replacing the sensor is not always the answer, as corroded terminals and broken wires can also trigger the same fault code. It should also be borne in mind that the car may need driving before the system recognises the new sensor and allows the ABS light to be extinguished

Inside Line: VOSA

VOSA issued a number of recalls for various models of the BMW 5 Series. Models, built between Nov 2007 and Feb 2011 were recalled to address a possible short circuit in the multi-plug of the coolant pump for the turbocharger. The problem leads to heat build-up in the pump, causing the plug and housing to melt. Technicians diagnosing reasons for the EML illuminating should bear in mind that replacement of the pump is the only resolution
