Inside Line: Castrol

The Vauxhall Insignia was unveiled in 2008 with a choice of four petrol engines – the most popular of which was the 1.8-litre – and a range of 2.0-litre CDTi diesel engines. With the introduction of extended mileage oil drain intervals, it’s important that vehicle technicians top-up these vehicles with the correct specification oil.

Only fully-synthetic formulations that have the relevant dexos2™ specification (which replaced the former GM-LL-A/B-025 specification) should be used in the Insignia. This will facilitate the OEM requirements for extended mileage intervals and any other lubricant could ultimately reduce the efficiency, performance and longevity of the engine.

Suspension

Front wheel drive models are equipped with 4-link rear suspension incorporating progressive rate, taper wire Miniblock springs. All 4x4 versions are equipped with what Vauxhall refer to as “H-Arm” rear suspension and more conventional, single pigtail springs. But the complexity doesn’t stop there. Vehicles fitted with Vauxhall’s “FlexRide” electronic chassis control option, factory sports suspension and all “EcoFlex” models, require special springs front and rear so mechanics should check whether these options are fitted before ordering replacements.

• Air-conditioning blowing fuses, check wiring loom for internal corrosion close to the compressor assembly.

• Clicking/banging noise from front when setting off, slight movement between front hub and driveshaft, strip and apply suitable grease no need the replace components.

• Engine running lumpy and lack of power (2.0 CDTi) no fault codes, mass air flow/intake air temp sensor contaminated with moisture.

• Steering wheel vibration similar to wheel balance, front suspension arm rear bushes worn.

• Engine loses power (limp mode) intermittent fault, loose wiring connector to high pressure fuel pump causing deviation in rail pressure.

Inside Line Vauxhall Insignia 08

There have been issues with the differential seal on some Vauxhall Insignia models.

The Corteco response is part no. 01033292B.

Given that sales of this part number in 2013 were up six-fold on the previous year, the evidence suggests that this component is increasingly in demand.

However, Corteco advises that replacement of this component can be a tricky routine and special care must be taken to:

a) Follow the appropriate procedure specified by the manufacturer

b) Remove the old seal using the correct seal removal tool (i.e not a screwdriver)

c) Use the correct tool to align and insert the replacement seal (i.e not a hammer)

ZF EPAS Replacement and Commissioning

The Vauxhall Insignia is equipped with ZF dual pinion electric power-assisted steering (EPAS). Although this is not normally a service item, it may on occasion be necessary to replace the system, e.g. in the event of accident damage. For safety reasons it is vital to replace only with genuine ZF parts. After installation, the system must be correctly commissioned, with attention to calibration of the zero position, adaptation of the soft end stops and flashing of the control unit with vehicle specific software. ZF Services UK can provide technical support if required.

• CDTi models can suffer from sticking EGR valves or EGR pipes becoming blocked, as a result of excessive carbon build up. If the EGR valve has become stuck open, it can lead to the DPF becoming blocked.

• The DPF pressure pipe sensor pipes can crack or even worse break, near to the steering rack. This causes the engine management light to illuminate and fault codes present for a DPF fault to be logged.

• A problem best avoided in the winter relates to the heated seats, which can fail, due to the failure of the seat pad electrical element.

Dayco ‘White’ Belts

The 2.0-litre diesel powered version of the Vauxhall Insignia is one of the marque’s best sellers and along with many other high performance engines, technicians will be increasingly familiar with the ‘white’ timing belts that are the vehicle’s original equipment (OE) fitment.

These OE belts are manufactured exclusively by Dayco and available to the aftermarket as the Dayco High Tenacity (HT) range. As a result, it is only Dayco that can provide the aftermarket with a truly matching OE product, because only Dayco HT kits replicate the vehicle

Some versions of Vauxhall’s popular Insignia have been known to suffer with braking issues such as cracked discs and complaints from drivers of judder and vibration through the steering wheel when they are braking.

In the case of excessive vibration, the free movement of the brake pads must be checked because the vibration can be caused by the brake pads being seized in the calipers, which will also cause overheating.

If the pads are found to be sticking then they should be removed and the lateral guides of the calipers must be cleaned. The guides should then be lubricated with specialist lubricant.

A few notes about the Vauxhall Insignia (2008-2013):

Engine Oil

For this particularly series of Insignia, Vauxhall list only one or two specifications for engine oil which should be covered by Comma Long Life 5W30 and Comma Syner-Z 5W30. For the 2008-2010 models the usual recommendation is Comma Long Life 5W30 however, there might be some cross over at the tail end. From 2011 onwards, Vauxhall list dexos 2 which is now GM global oil specification introduced for gasoline and diesel vehicles and is covered by Comma Syner-Z 5W30 so always use Comma’s application guide available at www.commaoil.com to make sure you get the right product for the vehicle you are servicing.
