Air con drain

There seems to be a wet patch on the far left hand passenger side floor. I don't think it's coming from the door or leaking from anywhere above as the ceiling is all dry etc. I did some research and discovered that it could be a sunroof or air conditioning drain could be clogged?

Power steering issue

I have driven to work this morning, no problems and no warnings then come to go out for lunch and I’ve got hardly any power steering ability.

Under normal conditions, the correct specification for a replacement battery should be in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines. However, many Range Rovers are heavily modified to improve still further their already legendary off road performance. As a result, vehicles fitted with additional electrical equipment, such as winches and auxiliary lighting, will need an uprated battery to cope with the extra load, the capacity of which needs to be carefully considered.

The Range Rover is a luxury vehicle with a sophisticated climate control system, so it is particularly important for technicians to ensure they change the cabin filter in accordance to the manufacturers service schedule.

Care must be taken when replacing the oil filter, as they are sometimes prone to leaks, particularly if a non-genuine replacement is used on the 3.6-litre diesel.

Weighing in at more than two tons and standing well over six feet tall, with a capacity for high mileage cruising and serious off road use, it’s easy to understand why the Range Rover’s steering & suspension components can wear quickly, particularly when fitted with upgraded 22” diameter wheels.

Independent multi-link front suspension, featuring both upper and lower suspension arms, delivers excellent handling, but is prone to wear, which is often identified by a knocking noise, especially when going over rough ground. Similar knocking or clunking noises from the rear suspension, can usually be traced back to worn rear hub bushes, which if not replaced, can not only cause vibration within the body and chassis, but also have an adverse effect on the handling.

Inside Line: Meyle

Sven Nielsen, Technical Director from MEYLE, says the following difficulties may arise with the Range Rover L322:

Stabiliser links often worn out

Problem:

Intense strain and high surface pressure wear and stress on the ball joint. This causes a premature failure of the ball joint and generates noise at the front axle.

MEYLE-HD solution:

MEYLE in-house engineers increased the ball pin diameter to 22 mm, in addition to using wear-resistant synthetic ball sockets with high-tech grease. The reduction of the surface pressure ensures a significantly longer lifetime.

Steering and Suspension

A common problem with the L322 variant of the Range Rover is heavy steering. Common causes of this problem can include a fault with the power steering pump or a requirement to bleed the power steering fluid, but this could equally be caused by faulty rack ends or tie rod ends.

Hub carrier bushes connecting the rear suspension arms are known to prematurely fail. A telltale sign that this has occurred are unwelcome ‘clonking’ noises that materialise from the rear suspension when driving over bumps and divots. Replacing the rear hub carrier bushes can be problematic and usually requires a large amount of elbow grease and patience.

With a comprehensive range of high powered, high capacity engines its important to pay attention to the correct engine oil recommendation.

All engines require synthetic products respecting Ford and BMW specifications, with viscosity grades ranging from 5W-20, 5W-30 and 5W-40. Engine oil change interval is typically 15,000 miles / 12 months, but this will be dependent on conditions and application, ie towing heavy loads.

Our Technical team has come back with the following known common issues with the Range Rover L322 variant you are covering in your next issue.

The Alternator on the 3.0 TD6 (BMW Engined models) suffers from premature failure due to oil ingress, this causes the Alternator brushes to overheat and melt which in turn burn the copper on the slip rings, early signs of this type of failure are poor or erratic charge rate before resulting in total failure of the Alternator.
