Inside Line: Dayco

Primary (timing) Drive System

Many of the engines used across the Ulysse/C8/807 range are fitted with a Dayco High Tenacity (HT), or ‘white’, timing belt as its original equipment (OE) fitment. Most of the units also feature a water pump that is integrated into the timing drive system and driven by the timing belt.

Dayco recommend technicians follow industry best practice and ensure that they replace the water pump when the timing belt is being replaced and vice versa. Both of these components cover the same mileages, so replacing both at the same time is the most cost effective option in the long-term and provides motorists with much needed peace of mind following a vehicle repair.

Turbo Hoses

It is not uncommon for the turbo outlet hose in these vehicles to split or crack and allow unregulated air into the system, which reduces boost pressure to the turbo and causes a drop in power. The turbo hoses can also clog up with soot and oil from the turbo, which could be early signs of the turbocharger beginning to fail. First Line turbo outlet hose FTH1058 is the replacement component for all variants.

Inside Line: Cambiare

Cambiare says that the brake light switches on these models can be problematic; the failure of the switch is obviously highlighted when both the brake lights fail to illuminate on the application of the foot brakes.

Cambiare further states that engine management temperature sensor problems, usually the result of poor hot or cold starting, high fuel consumption, hesitation, or increase in engine emissions, is often flagged by a series of trouble codes, namely:

  • P0115: Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit

  • P0116: Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range/Performance

  • P0117: Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Low Input

  • P0118: Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit High Input

Inside Line: RMI

All engine types, banging or clonking noise when manoeuvring/parking – front hub bearing outer case loose in the hub, replace with modified parts only.

All diesel engines fitted with DPF system – constant aborted DPF regeneration cycles will ultimately dilute the engine oil with diesel, if this goes unnoticed and the level continues to rise the engine will self-ingest the oil and could cause the engine to run flat out and self-destruct.

2.2 HDi engine premature cam belt failure – this can be caused by a slight coolant leak from the cooling system header tank going into the timing belt cover.

Stabiliser links often worn out

Problem:

High center of gravity of the cars, intense strain and high surface pressure wear and stress on the ball joint. This causes a premature failure of the ball joint and generates noise at the front axle.

MEYLE-HD solution:

Meyle in-house engineers increased the ball pin diameter to 22 mm, in addition to using wear-resistant synthetic ball sockets with high-tech grease. The reduction of the surface pressure ensures a significantly longer lifetime.

Defective engine mounts

Eurovans (second gen) Fiat Ulysse/ Peugeot 807/ Citroen C8

All the above vehicles suffer from premature starter motor failure caused due to insufficient rated fuses. The fuses must be replaced with a higher rated fuse to avoid further failure. The lower rated fuse can cause excessive cranking of the starter motor resulting in it burning out.

The Citroen C8 starter motor is also affected due to a chafed wiring harness resulting in a short circuit and the failure of a fuse in the engine bay. This failure also results in the starter motor burning out.

Engine Oil

For this particularly series of cars, each manufacturer lists differing specifications for engine oil which should be covered by a number of Comma products. Do not assume that the cars will all use the same engine oil.

Braking

A commonly identified fault with these models is a worn brake hose caused by rubbing contact with the heat shield that protects the exhaust system. In extreme cases this can result in a leak from a brake circuit which typically manifests itself through increased brake pedal travel.

Inside Line: Petronas

Diesel versions require a 5W-30 synthetic low sap product to ensure the correct protection and performance of the DPF system. Some Petrol versions have the option to use 10W-40 but we recommend a synthetic 5W-40 for improved cold starting and fuel economy benefits for all petrol engines. It’s important to check the service interval as outlined in the owner’s manual, as this varies dependent on engine version and year of manufacture.

It is interesting to note that the 807 courtesy cars we have had have shown some of the same faults as our car.
