A survey of 11,000 shoppers by consumer magazine Which? has rated Halfords as the worst high street retailer.

The survey was carried out to highlight the best and worst performing shops on the UK high street. Topping the table was beauty giant Lush, with 83 percent of customers recommending the store. By contrast Halfords scored just 51 percent.

The survey also reveals the changing shopping habits of UK consumers. The majority of respondents said they now buy more products online than on the high street, while 56 percent said they do less shopping now compared to last year.

Which? Editor Martyn Hocking said: "With household budgets squeezed, people are becoming choosier about when and how they purchase products. High street shops cannot afford to give customers poor service if they want to tempt shoppers away from their computers and back to the high street."

A Halfords Spokesperson said: "At Halfords providing great products and a high level of  service is a top priority and our feedback shows that thousands of customers each week love the help we provide. We are working hard and investing to improve our offer further and to provide an even better experience for customers."
