The value of the service, maintenance and repair (SMR) industry has grown to be worth almost £9 billion in 2011, the latest Castrol Professional Car Servicing and Repair Trend Tracker report has revealed.

Data in the report shows that the value of SMR, excluding MOT work and VAT increased by 6.3 percent between 2010 and 2011.

The report also says further growth is expected over the next 12 months.

Independents should be praised, too, for holding on to a large proportion of the SMR market. In fact, the levels of servicing work independent garages are undertaking has increased by almost ten percent.

While the industry can pat itself on the back for its efforts, there are also worrying elements to the report. There were over six million fewer SMR jobs in 2011, at 47.2 million.

The report suggests that the resulting increase in market value stems from an increased in annual car spend among motorists from £242 in 2006 to £286 in 2011.
