Accessory distributor Saxon Brands is carrying out a review of the packaging on the products it distributes.

The aim, which has been in part driven by conversations with large UK retailers, is to reduce plastic waste. Clear recycling instructions will also be printed on cartons.

One example is Sakura branded car seat covers. Previously sold in clear PVC cases, the product will now be shipped in cardboard boxes.

Recycling instructions will comply with the 'On-Pack Recycling Label' (OPRL) scheme, already used by large retailers including Shell, Tesco and Unilever.

Clair Seymour, Commercial and Product Manager at Saxon, said: “One thing that kept coming up regularly in feedback [with retailers] was the need to deliver sustainable packaging to an ever-expecting consumer, and many of these retailers were already undertaking their own programme of improvements.  Keen to work with suppliers who would help them achieve their targets there was a drive to ensure that we were on the same page to ensure our products weren’t de-listed”.

Legislation requiring companies to have a minimum quantity of recyclable packing is set to take effect in April 2022.
