Noises from the transmission oil on a VW Polo 1.2-litre (9N_)

Fault symptoms:



Increased wear on transmission.

Noises in the 1st and 2nd gear from the transmission region.

Causes:



Wrong transmission oil used.

Remedy:



Gearbox oil change

If the action has already been accomplished, there will be a sticker in the region of the spare wheel recess, the toolkit, or the driver’s footwell, and the action is documented in the service booklet.

Procedure:


Drain:

Run up transmission to operating temperature.

Remove air filter housing. (If required)

Lock the switch shaft.

Press gearshift lever downward and snap in the retention pin.

At the same time, rotate retention pin in the direction of the arrow.

Lift vehicle.

Remove underride guard.

Unscrew the gearbox oil drain plug. (1)

Remove bearing journal. (2)

Drain gear oil.

Collect drained oil.

Observe disposal regulations!

Install bearing journal. (2)

Screw in oil drain plug. (1)

(see Figure2)

Disconnect retention pin. (1)

(see Figure1)

Purge:



Remove the back-up lamp switch. (1)

Connect hose with funnel to the back-up lamp switch hole. (1)

Top up oil via the bore.

Required filling quantity: 1,70 litres

Install back-up lamp switch. (1)

Start engine.

Keep engine running a couple of minutes with the gear engaged so as to distribute the gear oil.

Lock the switch shaft.

Press gearshift lever downward and snap in the retention pin. (1) (2)

At the same time, rotate retention pin in the direction of the arrow.

Unscrew the gearbox oil drain plug. (1)

Remove bearing journal. (2)

Drain gear oil.

Collect drained oil.

Observe disposal regulations!

Replace seal(s).

Install bearing journal. (2)

Screw in oil drain plug. (1)

Disconnect retention pin. (1)

(see Figure1)

Top up:



Remove the back-up lamp switch. (1)

Connect hose with funnel to the back-up lamp switch hole. (1)

Top up oil via the bore.

Replace seal(s).

Install back-up lamp switch. (1)

(see Figure3)

Continue assembly in reverse order of removal.

Required special tools:

Hose: Length approx. 600 mm, diameter 10 mm. (commercially available)

Funnel (commercially available)

Fault with heated seats

Fault symptoms:



Burnt smell in the interior

Seat cover is charred in the seat heating region.

Seat heating overheated or defective.

Causes:



Short in seat heating.

Remedy:



Repair tension wires of seat-back cover.
