Motorists don’t back scrappage scheme extension

Four out of five motorists voted against the Government’s decision to extend the car scrappage scheme in a survey by Motorpoint.

Earlier this week, Business Secretary Lord Mandelson announced an additional £100m would be made available for the scheme taking the total funding to £400m.

But an online poll of 2120 people by Motorpoint found that 86% are firmly against using more public funds to bail out car makers.

Only 14% of people backed the move.

“It is clear from the results of the poll that the majority of people believe the car scrappage scheme had achieved its goal and didn’t see the sense in using more taxpayers’ money to subside manufacturers’ sales,” said David Shelton, Motorpoint MD.

"Therefore, the decision to provide an additional £100m worth of funding seems baffling and on closer inspection would appear to be nothing more than an act of electioneering.”
