Denso has announced a new oblong QR code format which could become as recognisable as the now-familiar square barcodes.

The Japan-based parts manufacturer invented the original QR code format in 1994. Originally developed for cataloguing parts inventory, the images can carry far more information than a traditional barcode. QR stands for 'quick response' and while these are commonly used to store web addresses, they can be used for other short messages such as WiFi passwords etc. .

The rectangular Micro QR Code, (or rMQR Code for short), comes as a consequence of further development of existing QR Code technology to make it possible to create a code that is easy to read, while being rectangular in shape, instead of the typical square version that is nowadays, so familiar. As a result, the new code can be reproduced to appear in long, narrow spaces, such as box edges or margins and therefore effectively contributes to information management in small spaces with a limited height dimension.
After inventing the QR format, Denso set up it's 'Wave' department, which (among other things) licences and develops barcode products.
