Warning made as hydraulic fluid does not meet safety standard

A safety warning has been issued for a hydraulic fluid which does not meet claimed safety standards.

Made by the Verification of Lubricant Specifications (VLS), an independent body, it involves Mannol Central Hydraulic Fluid 8990. The case has been sent to Trading Standards.

VLS says it was made aware of the issue in June 2023, after it received a complaint alleging that the product did not meet the Kinematic Viscosity (KV) -40°C limits stated in its performance claims against the VW specifications listed.

The product is multifunctional and designed for use in selected power steering, transmission, suspension and other hydraulic systems. Failure to comply with these specifications could impair performance at low temperatures and compromise vehicle safety.

VLS says it independently procured a sample of the product within the UK and completed its own independent testing for Kinematic Viscosity (KV) -40°C, in which the product failed to meet the VW specification it claimed.

VLS did not receive a response to the complaint from Mannol regarding the issue, and the case was reported as non-compliant.

The case was subject to a six-month review in line with VLS's stated process. VLS sourced and tested a new product sample as part of the review. The new sample, a different batch from the original sample tested, was still out of specification.

A statement from VLS said: "Some claims had been removed from the technical specification. However, the claim against VW TL 52 146 had been retained, which VLS believes is non-compliant and could pose a serious safety risk in applications requiring this specification.

"On this basis, details of the case have been escalated to VLS's Primary Authority partner, Bucks & Surrey Trading Standards, on a non-compliant basis against VW TL 52 146."

David Wright, VLS's company secretary, added: “We urge motor factors, mechanics and end users alike to avoid using this central hydraulic fluid, which could cause problems with vehicle operation, including power steering and suspension. Sufficient action must be taken to protect driver safety.”
