MOT demand set to surge this month

Garages face a surge in demand for MOTs as some 3.4 million tests are due this month, according to DVSA figures.

This is a marked increase on the number of tests conducted this time last year, reports suggest, representing almost 40% of the 8.6 million conducted between July and September 2023.

The surge is a result of the deferrals granted during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the DVSA. Some 10 million drivers extended their cars' MOTs by six months between 30 March 2020 and 31 July 2020.

This affected how tests were distributed between each calendar month, effectively moving demand from March, April, May, June and July to September, October, November, December and January, respectively.

"It’s crucial for drivers to book their appointments in advance," said Steve Horne, CEO of GSF Car Parts.
