Garages urged to sign up to new data access scheme

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has called for workshops to sign up to the Security-related Repair and Maintenance Information scheme – which will provide them with easier access to cars’ security systems – as soon as possible.

The new initiative, named SERMI, will bring access to several manufacturers’ security systems under one umbrella.

This will mean that, for services such as re-coding keys, garages will no longer need to manage multiple individual approvals for each manufacturer they deal with.

The IGA lists additional benefits as direct access to ECU programming and software downloads and the ability for remote service providers to provide diagnostics more easily, saving time and money.

It added that it anticipates a high level of demand for SERMI certification, meaning garages should apply as soon as possible to minimise delays.

“SERMI represents a fundamental shift for the entire aftermarket,” said IGA chief executive Stuart James. “By providing fair, secure and consistent access to vital vehicle data, it ensures that businesses of all sizes and specialisms can thrive in a rapidly changing sector. Those who act now and complete their registration will be the first to benefit once the scheme goes live.”

You can register by completing this expression of interest form, or by calling 01788 538 301.
